Celebrating Print: Masters of Czech and Slovak Printmaking

exhibition 10 December, 2013 - 15 January, 2014

[BBLA Gallery]

The world of fantasy and imagination of two generations of Czech and Slovak artists is subject to the exhibition “Celebrating Print: Masters of Czech and Slovak Printmaking” at BBLA Gallery. Over 50 etchings, lithographs, wood engravings and mixed media works unleash your imagination through fantastical narratives and excellent craftsmanship.

The exhibition, curated by artist, curator and writer Katerina Kyselica, will explore variety of artistic approaches and diverse visual language by artists – printmakers, painters, illustrators and sculptors who used or use printmaking as a medium allowing them to make their mind work in a different way.

Most of the presented works have been selected from private collection of fine art print dealer Marvin Bolotsky. "My wife and I were visiting Prague in the spring of 1990, during the first post-communist election. We stumbled on the Obcanske forum headquarters [..political party Civil Forum], entered and, while discussing the election, noticed some superb lithographs on exhibit. After learning they were done by two Czech printmakers, Oldrich Kulhanek and Jan Krejci, I visited Kulhanek in his studio, befriended and photographed him and bought several of his prints. Oldrich guided me to other  Czechoslovak printmakers whom I photographed and bought work from. I thought, at the time, I would produce an art book on Czechoslovak prints and their creators. I have built a modest collection of Central and Eastern European art since visiting the former communist Europe, with emphasis on Czech and Slovak artists. I no longer had need for collecting old masters." explains Marvin Bolotsky his first encounters with (then) Czechoslovak printmakers.
