Two Nights With Czech Theater, IN CZECH ONLY 09 August, 2018 - 5:00 PM

[Bohemian National Hall]

The play “Marysa” by Vilem and Alois Mrstik, presented by the Krupka Cultural Center, belongs to the golden age of Czech drama. Since its premiere in the National Theatre on May 9, 1894 in Prague, this folk tragedy has been a constant in Czech theaters, both professional and amateur. It is not only part of the current repertoire of the National Theatre in Prague, but also of Ostrava’s Petr Bezruc Theatre and Zlin’s City Theatre. It also appears in the 2018 National Competition for Amateur Czech Theatre.

The Krupka Cultural Center (KCC) Theatre Company has a long and rich history. Founded in 1945, the company has been performing a broad range of classical and modern plays for over seventy years, and it has devoted itself primarily to contemporary Czech and Russian theater during the last few decadesOne of the company’s high points was its 1988 production of Dale Wasserman’s theatrical adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cockoo’s Nest. The KCC Theatre Company was the only amateur company that the author declined to charge for the rights, and in 1990 the performance was nominated for the top prize in the category of Czech Amateur Theatre at the Jiraskuv Hronov theatre festival. In 1996 at Austria’s Hozhausen International Theatre Festival, the company enjoyed great success with their performance of Chekhov’s one-act The Bear. More recently, the company received acclaim for their production of Vaclav Havel’s play Leaving. The KCC Theatre Company was, in fact, the first amateur theater company to perform the play during Havel’s life.
