On the first night, a production of one of the most important 19th century Czech dramas, Mrstik brothers’ Marysa will be performed by an amateur theater troupe from the city of Krupka, Czech Republic, followed by a discussion about the Czech amateur theater movement and an illustrated talk about Czech Amateur Theater Groups and their collection of decorated theater curtains based on a research project in the field of amateur theater done by NIPOS.

On the second night, Czech-American actor and puppeteer Vit Horejs and his century-old marionettes will perform three Czech & Slovak Fairy Tales. This will be followed by a discussion of Czech-Canadian Theater “Around the Corner” concerning the past and the present of Czech amateur theater in the USA and Canada.

The Two Nights with Czech Theater are comprised within a larger research project of NIPOS—Collection and Digitalization of Sources linked with Czech Amateur Theater Movement in the USA. The results of this research into Czech amateur theater and its rootswill be published in the on-line database at www.amaterskedivadlo.cz. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of independent Czechoslovakia, we intend to bridge the gap in research—to present a more complete picture of history and contemporary state of Czech amateur theater in the USA. The organizers would be grateful to establish new contacts with our compatriots abroad and to begin cooperation on all levels, which will hopefully foster the preservation of our common cultural heritage.
