Zdenek Lhotsky: Drawings & Glass

art exhibition 29 March, 2017 - 24 April, 2017

[BBLA Gallery at Bohemian National Hall]

The exhibition Zdenek Lhotsky: Drawings & Glass presents a selection of glass objects and large drawings on paper by the leading Czech artist and designer Zdenek Lhotsky.

Lhotsky, a student and colleague of Stanislav Libensky, was listed in the April 2016 issue of Wallpaper magazine among 12 Czechs affecting the design world. He gained international recognition 23 years ago, when he took over the failing center for melted glass in Zelezny Brod, Czech Republic, and became a popular implementer of voluminous projects in melted glass. He has developed and patented a special glass melting technology “vitrucell.”

Zdenek Lhotsky (b. 1956) is a visual artist – painter and sculptor specializing in glass. His work has appeared in over 240 exhibitions in Europe, the US, the Gulf and Asia-Pacific; he has won numerous prizes and is a recipient of the Bavaria/Germany State Award. He exclusively follows his own personal visual norm, characterized by orthodox civilian forms, with geometric or ornamental features. As a founding member of the Tvrdohlavi (The Stubborn), Lhotsky has positioned himself in opposition to rigid social norms and snob morality. During the 1980s he allied himself, whilst maintaining his independent approach, with the Czech Postmodernists who were then in revolt against the totalitarian regime and whose work formed the milestones of Czech culture. Lhotsky has completed commissions for prominent companies, institutions and private clients around the world, including the Danish royal family, and has earned a global reputation for his architectural compositions. His oeuvre ranges from large-scale works to small masterpieces the size of a human hand.
