Joseph Balaz 01 March, 2018

Even though we just sailed through the shortest month of the year, we still did offer a long list of events in February. Perhaps our most highly attended one was the Czech Heritage Night.

The Grand Ballroom in Bohemian National Hall was simply packed and guests huddled together on the fifth floor balcony as well. The evening started with a fashion show presenting the latest collection of a very talented Czech designer based in Australia, Iva Pfeiffer: models strutted the runway showing Iva's creations, accompanied by Tomas Kaco, a piano virtuoso.

Afterwards the recently retired NHL legend, Patrik Elias, was interviewed by Robert Sovik, a former junior hockey player, currently leader of a project helping Czech and Slovak athletes with getting scholarships at American universities. Patrik was incredible and his comments were very inspirational. He brought his wife, Petra, his kids and even his parents to the event. He also received the Masaryk medal from the Consul General of the Czech Republic, Mr. Rames.

The finale of the evening was the auction of one of Iva's dresses and Patrik's jersey with a hockey stick: proceeds of the auction totaling $12,000.00 were given to support UNICEF, an organization Patrik Elias is deeply involved with. Patrik's memorabilia were won by a visiting developer from Prague, Mr. Martin Hubinger, and Iva Pfeiffer's dress was acquired by Ms. Irena Bailey.

I would like to thank the Czech Center, the Consulate and our team for a fantastic collaboration on this event.
