Taking Off on the Grand Scale: From the President

Joseph Balaz 01 September, 2018

What does the sound of floor-sanding machines mixed with whiffs of polyurethane coating have in common with names like Kvitova, Pliskova, Nadal and Shapovalov? Well, the annual US Open tennis extravaganza in Flushing and our annual "Sprucing up the Bohemian National Hall Ritual" actually always remarkably coincide with each other at the end of August. This year, our team skillfully upgraded the audio system, the lights were updated, and all the wall surfaces were redone. We are ready for the fall season and this month, we are taking off with some very important events.

I would like to invite you to support the fundraiser organized by the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation taking place on September 27. We are excited to host Madeleine Albright as the guest of honor. Please make sure you do not miss the Rehearsal For Truth Theater Festival or the DAHA chamber music concert with the Martinu Quartet. Our exhibit Czech and Slovak New York, 1848-2018 will also be fascinating. All these activities and more are listed on our website.

Now going back to those tennis players. According to the Bohemian Spirit staff, the Czech women stars regularly load up on their caloric intake with dumplings and svickova sauce at our restaurant on their days off. We all wish them lots of success in the next rounds. By the way, I simply do not understand why my backhand has not improved dramatically despite my frequent exposure to the very same diet. Go figure.

We hope to see you soon.

On behalf of our entire team,

Joseph Balaz
