In a tribute to Czech musicologist Lenka Hlavkova, seven premieres that link music of the past with contemporary musical thought will be presented in concert. This is a re-creation of an idea proposed and carried out by Hlavkova in a series of concerts in Prague, the Czech Republic, before her untimely death in a random shooting at Charles University in 2023 that resulted in many deaths and injuries.
The seven world premieres are by composers:
Michael Beckerman, New Work (2026)
Jacob Beranek, Litanie (2026)
Louis Karchin, The Past as Present (2025)
Vasiliki Krimitza, ergo (2026)
Yoon-Ji Lee, Spring View (2026)
David Sanford, Missa Brevis (2026)
Nina C. Young, New Work (2026)
Performed by sopranos Jennifer Zetlan, Alice Teysser, Marisa Karchin, and members of the Washington Square Ensemble: Curtis Macomber, violin, Chris Gross, cello, and Steven Beck, piano, conducted by Tengku Irfan.
Free and open to the public. Seats are limited, on first-come first-served basis. RSVP through Eventbrite.
This event is organized by Washington Square Contemporary Music Society, with support from the Dvorak American Heritage Association and the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association.
